Hi,
I've downloaded your app and tried connecting up to several different CRM Online organizations. I've tried several different permutations of the fields in the
Connect to CRM dialog but can't get it to sign in. I couldn't find documentation on the format of the CRM Server URL and CRM Organization Name fields.
For example, if my CRM Online URL is
https://foo.crm.dynamics.com, is that the same as what you refer to as the CRM Server URL? If so, is the CRM Organization Name what's referred to in CRM as the "organization unique name"? I assumed that's what they were but tried them and
couldn't get them to work.
Any guidance would be appreciated since it sounds like your app would be really useful. Thanks in advance!

I was having the same issues with CRM 2011 Online but got it to work. First I had to delete the LiveDevice.Xml file in C:\Users\<yourname>\LiveDeviceID as I had been using other applications and this code tries to use this xml file and will fail.
I regularly delete this file when using different utilities or WLID and solves lots of issues.
In the CRM Server I replaced http://server with
https://mydemo.crm4.dynamics.com and put "mydemo" in the org name - I did not use the Organization Unique name. I put my WLID in the user name and password and it is all working. Nice tool.

We are having similar issues as above
We are using the full URL for the CRM2011 Online
https://foo.crm.dynamics.com
But the organization name of foo did not work neither did the name that appears in the upper right corner. Our organization name has spaces.
Shouldn't this load the set of orgs available to the WLID rather than have you hard code the organization name into the box. Would make this less error prone.
Looking forward to connecting to our CRM2011 online tool.

Hi.
I'm having the same problem. Our organization name has spaces in, whereas the URL doesn't.
I've tried using the org ID with and without spaces to no avail.
Any answers yet?
Thanks.

Hmmm...I took another run at this today, and I think I actually got it to work. Here's what I did:
- Deleted the liveid file following janett's instructions above in the thread.
- In the connections dialog, I used the full url of my crm online org:
https://foo.crm.dynamics.com
- in the organization name, i used foo, not the unique org id
- supplied windows live id and password.
- At first it did not work (maybe I mistyped password or something), and I couldn't get the correct settings to work.
- Shut down the application, reloaded it, and made sure everything was correct, and it worked.
To summarize, use this as an example to connect:
- CRM Server URL: https://foo.crm.dynamics.com
- CRM Organization Name: foo
- Login: <your windows live id)
- Password: <your windows live password>
If you get an error at first, close the app and reload it.
One minor issue was once I was signed in correctly I didn't get a confirmation or anything. But the Open button on the ribbon was available. When I clicked it, I had to connect up again, which seemed odd. But once I did that, I was able to get the list of
my entities and so forth.
Good luck!

I tried all the above but still could not get a connection to our CRM Online instance via the visual ribbon editor. So I tried the other ribbon editor (by TanGuy92) and I got an error message back 'email address not verified'. I verified the email address
and it worked!
So that could be something else to consider I guess if you are still struggling with this.

I used this last week against two different 2011 Online organizations and it works fine for me to connect by following richardknudson's instructions above. I do find with all of these kind of tools that run against 2011 Online that sometimes the authentication
fails (timeout perhaps) and you just have to try again.
@James - what error are you getting? As richard pointed out, there isn't anything to say you are connected but the Open button is available.
One thing I noticed with this tool is that I added a new button with a tooltip, I could not edit that tooltip later. So I still had to export the solution, modiify the xml and put it back but at least most of it was there.

Well I'm not getting any errors now, but I was getting a generic error along the lines of unable to connect to crm.
The error message from the other ribbon tool meant I could see that I needed to verify my Windows Live email address. Once I had done this I was able to connect with both ribbon tools without error. So I posted this just in case others may be experiencing
the same problem.

Has anyone else seemingly followed all of the steps that Richard has clearly laid out, but still get a "Failed to Connect to CRM" error? I'm still struggling to get past this and just cannot seem to get the right combination of field values.
Any ideas?

@jlockard - are you trying to connect to CRM Online? I used this again today with a new CRM 2011 Online organisation and it worked fine. Can you tell us the details you are trying to use?

The key step for me was the first one: I noticed that every time after using the editor, a new liveid file would be created. If I delete it every time before using the editor, I could connect; if not, I couldn’t.
Make sure you delete that file; in my case I could connect consistently provided I did that.

Janet, Richard - Thanks for your prompt responses! I am using CRM 2011 Online. And, I have made sure that the c:\users\jlockard\LiveDeviceID folder is empty before hand.
The URL for my org is:
https://gpstrategiestest.crm.dynamics.com
For the CRM Organization Name, I tried using GPStrategiesTest and gpstrategiestest.
I'm using valid credentials for my WLID - one that I use to log into the CRM instance via the browser.
See anything that I am gooning up? Thanks again for your assistance!

Has anyone gotten this working for CRM on-premises?
I am unable to connect. I tried to follow Jenette's directions but there is no LiveID file at that location.
I was getting a generic "Failed to Connect to CRM" message but this last attempt gave me "Testing Connection..." which hasn't returned after a couple of minutes. I tried both my AD logon ad my LiveID.

|
|
|
|
We've got it connecting now for on-premises:
CRM Server URL: https://servername/
CRM Organization Name: OrganizationName (no spaces) Login: domain/AD userid Password: AD password
|
|
|
|
|
For on-premise you might need to install WIF:

Has there been any updates or details for connecting to MSCRM 2011 using Office365? I can connect to CRM 2011 Online Live accounts but not when using O365.

As highlighted by mbogan - this otherwise excellent tool does not seem to work with Dynamics CRM Online installations provided via Office 365. I've ended up with 2 installations to support. One is direct Dynamics CRM Online accessed via Windows
Live ID's and all works well (after taking note of the connection issues discussed above). The other is provided via Office 365 and I cannot use the tool with this one. Frustrating!
Would dearly love to be able to use Visual Ribbon Editor 2011 with Office 365 installs.

Is there going to be an update to work with O365? All new CRM Onlines now use this, this tool cant be used with them at the moment?!

I got this working for O365 today. I downloaded the sourcecode and did the following:
Replace crmservicehelpers.cs and deviceidmanger.cs with those from latest sdk
Replace (or add) references to Microsoft.IdentityModel, System.Directoryservices.AccountManagement, Microsoft.crm.sdk.proxy, and Microsoft.xrm.sdk
Recompile.
In the connection I used:
CRM Server URL: https://ABC.crm.dynamics.com
CRM Organization Name: ABC Login: mylogin@abc.onmicrosoft.com
Password: <password>
